Cast Iron Dreams

Like most cooks, I have my wish list of gadgets, cookware, and appliances. This past year I have been wishing for a dutch oven. I keep running across recipes that use them and I don't have an adequate substitute. I make short ribs, roast, and stews on top of the stove or in a slow cooker but would love to try these in a dutch oven. Fall and winter are the perfect seasons for this type of cooking. I've been dreaming of the Le Creuset 6.75 oval French Oven available at Crate and Barrel. I'm familiar with this brand which is why this would be my first choice.

I was looking at the Crate and Barrel website today and came across Mario Batali’s 6 quart Dutch Oven. I'm excited to visit the store and compare the two brands since there is a significant price difference. I'm interested in a cast iron pot that can transfer from stove top to oven for slow cooking. I'd like to be able to sauté spices and brown meat on top of the stove, deglaze the pot and transfer to the oven.

My mind is racing with the recipes I could make with this method especially during the holiday season. Maybe Santa will bring me a dutch oven and stay for dinner.

  1. Oh, I hope he brings you one, "B"! What wonderful things you can cook up with these! Though not the wonderful Le Creuset, Sam's club has their Member's Mark cast iron enamel pots for a fraction of a cost. FYI. :)

  2. I have 2 outdoor ones and 1 red enamel one -- it's a Tramontina, cheaper brand, but I have been happy with it. Love it that it is red. I hope you get your dutch oven. Joni

  8. Those pots are sure helpful. I have the Martha Stewart dutch oven/Le creuset look a like. I was a gift from my sister. I check around and it has the best price of all. The pot is so easy to clean up, that is a bonus.

Have a great time shopping around.

  9. I'm finally getting a chance to catch up on your blog, sorry it took so long. I have this Dutch oven and I LOVE it, I feel that it is just as heavy as the Le Creuset, the only downfall is that the finish on my knob has started to come off, but that doesn't hinder cooking and the price is way less than the Le Creuset
